Chulucanas Pottery Animal Sculpture, Peru.
|Availability:||In stock (2)|
Chulucanas is a Peruvian town renowned for their production of distinct ceramics. The pieces, shaped from local clay, achieve a satiny smoothness through polishing using river stones of various sizes. They are then fired in handmade ovens with carob branches harvested from the abundant trees in the area. A clay slip is used as a resist to protects parts of the pieces from the resinous smoke produced by burning mango and sapote leaves. This yields beautiful contrasts between the dark smoked areas and the un-smoked white or colourful surfaces when the slip is cleaned away after firing. Based on ancient skills, this technique has been thriving since the 1970s in this northern Peruvian town.
We are proud to offer a selection of fairly traded Chulucanas animal sculptures. Handmade in Peru, they measure between 6 and 9" high, depending on the style chosen.
