Hand-formed and etched by makers with Union of Peasants for Self-Development (UPAP) in Niger. UPAP consists on skilled Tuareg jewellers who etch each fine silver pendant with hand-engraved details. The expert silversmiths, sometimes called “the Blue People of the desert” due to the indigo dye used on their garments that stains their skin, hand-hammer each piece of art using pure fine silver, and in some cases, ebony and semi precious stones. The same simple tools and techniques are passed down from ancestors. Some Tuareg families have been creating high-quality, handcrafted jewellery for more than 25 generations. Today, jewellery creates income that supplements subsistence farming.
