Argentina is a country in the southern half of South America. It is the second largest country in South America, after Brazil. The name “Argentina” traces its roots through Spanish into Italian, meaning “made of silver” or “silver coloured.” after the silver mountains legend about a mythical source of silver in the South American interior.
Contemporary Argentina is considered a country of immigrants, a crisol de razas (crucible of races, or melting pot). A large majority of the population have a mixed ancestry, primarily European (mainly from Italy or Spain), but also some indigenous roots as well. The country is also home to a notable Asian population, either West Asian (from Lebanon or Syria) or East Asian (with roots in China, Korea, or Japan). More recently immigrants have moved to Argentina from neighbouring South American countries and eastern Europe. Argentinian culture has also been strongly influenced by its blend of European and South American traditions, as can be seen in its food, music, and other traditions.
