South Africa is the southernmost country in Africa. It is a land with a great deal of biodiversity, including unique plant and animal biomes. About 80% of the population are Black South Africans, while the remaining population consists of Africa's largest communities of European, Asian, and multiracial ancestry. Together this has created a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Unfortunately, for much of the 20th century, racial supremacy on the part of the controlling white minority dominated South African politics, formally imposing apartheid in 1948 and maintaining institutionalized racial segregation. After a long and sometimes violent struggle, and faced by increasing worldwide condemnation, they finally began dismantling the apartheid laws in 1990, leading to free elections in 1994.
Today South Africa enjoys relative stability, however greater political equality and economic stability do not necessarily mean social tranquility. South African society continues to face challenges in areas of crime, ethnic tensions, great disparities in housing and educational opportunities, and the ongoing AIDS pandemic.
