Bolivia is a landlocked country in central South America with a diverse geography that include Amazonian plains and tropical lowlands along with the mountains and plateaus of the highland regions. It is often regarded as a highland country, although only about a third of its territory (admittedly including most of its largest cities) are in the Andes Mountains. 

The country has a rich history. It was once the center of the ancient Tiwanaku (Tiahuanaco) empire, and from the 15th to the early 16th century it was a part of the Inca empire. After the arrival of the conquistadores Bolivia became part of the larger Viceroyalty of Peru, and it provided Spain with immense wealth in silver. 

Bolivia suffered from violence and political instability at various times over the past century. Today Bolivia remains a developing country, although it has been reducing its poverty rates over the past decades, and now has one of the fastest growing economies (in terms of GDP) in South America.
