Ghana

Ghana is a country in West Africa. Many kingdoms and empires have emerged in the region over the centuries, and Ghana takes its name from the great medieval trading empire that was located northwest of the modern-day state. Europeans began trading in the region in the 15th century, first for gold, but unfortunately by the 17th century, the focus turned to the lucrative slave trade. Later, in the 19th century, Ghana became an important region for growing and exporting cacao (chocolate).

While small in area and population, Ghana is one of the leading countries of Africa, in part because it was the first black African country south of the Sahara to achieve independence from colonial rule. Today, Ghana is a multi-ethnic country with a diverse population, linguistic and religious groups.

As you explore Village Goods, look for hand-woven baskets made from renewable materials such as banana leaf and elephant grass. You may also find a variety of musical instruments common to the region.
