Guatemala, a Central American country south of Mexico, is home to volcanoes, rainforests and ancient Mayan sites. It has an abundance of biologically significant and unique ecosystems including many endemic species. The core of the Maya civilization, which extended across Mesoamerica, was historically based in the territory of modern Guatemala. In the 16th century, most of this area was conquered and claimed by the Spanish until Guatemala attained independence in 1821.

Guatemala continues to struggle with high rates of poverty and crime, drug cartels, and instability. The income distribution is highly unequal with more than half of the population below the national poverty line.

By shopping fair trade, you can help artisans who might not otherwise be able to support their families. You will find a variety of hand-crafted items from Guatemala in our store, including beaded ornaments, colourful handwoven fabric, embroidered bags or wallets, ceramics and stoneware, along with other items made from upcycled or reclaimed materials.
