Jordan is an Arab country of Southwest Asia, in the rocky desert of the northern Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by Syria, Iraq, Saudia Arabia and both Israel and Palestine (West Bank). While a young state (it has only been an independent kingdom since 1949), the land that it occupies bears traces of many civilizations, and is rich in archaeological remains and religious traditions. 

Jordan is among the most politically liberal countries of the Arab world, and, although it shares in the troubles affecting the region, its rulers have expressed a commitment to maintaining peace and stability. The country has also opened its doors to refugees from neighbouring countries during times of crisis, although this has placed strain on communities and national infrastructure.
